When you decide to read "historical fiction" you sometimes don't know what you are getting. Often the books take place during known time periods in history but involve events that have little to no effect on that time period. In the case of Drumbeat, Trout places his main character right in the thick of the Civil War and doesn't deviate from the actual history. As a result, I think this is a great read for young adults as it gives a very good historical perspective of the war. The author does a very good job of viewing the war through the eyes of the drummer boy and thereby doesn't give the reader too biased of a view of things. The characters are strong and the descriptions are vivid. All in all a very entertaining read!
