EXCELLENT! Many authors are either character-focused or plot-focused in their approach, but Kate drives both like a master puppeteer. She shares the story with such authenticity I forgot it was a fiction novel. Warning---you may find your life interrupted as I did, because I could not put it down. I learned more about environmental issues than expected, and enjoyed the relationship dynamics of the characters. A Must-read!

Where I live, there is a lot of controversy about fracking. I appreciate how the author presents both sides of the fracking issue within a community without bias. I was easily invested in the characters and how the issues would be resolved. When I was done, I found myself hoping for a sequel!
In this debut novel, Kate Brandes explores brotherhood and what it means to be a mother, a husband, a true partner in life. I learned a lot about the current topics around fracking and pipelines - on both sides of the issue. The story is touching, thought-provoking and pulls the reader through to the end wondering what will happen.
This is a moving novel about the relationships between people and the land. The author does a good job of portraying the motivations, emotions, and histories of the main characters, and so I felt deeply empathetic towards all them, even those with whom I disagreed. I found myself in tears several times throughout the book, especially the places that explored the definition of marriage and commitment with a level of maturity and wisdom that shook me. In addition to the emotional depth of the book, the plot is tightly woven and utterly gripping; I was unable to put the book down once I got into it! It did end too abruptly for me I wanted more! I will always wonder what happened to the characters after the book ended. This is really some solid, down-to-earth, beautiful writing.
Kate Brandes writes very well. The characters are realistic--so realistic that I didn't like a few of them, but not liking someone in this book is integral to the story because families are never perfect, people make bad choices, everyone deals with loss differently, and life happens. Just as in real life, I picked sides. I picked sides with a character. I picked a side on whether drilling is a good thing or a bad thing. The author writes in such a way that doesn't alienate anyone while educating and entertaining the reader.
Living in Pennsylvania, the topic of fracking is widely debated. The family in this story is torn with the struggles of whether to allow fracking on their land. Similarly, the characters are being fractured by their cloudy past and the realities of the present. Just like the fissures underground, the weak spots in this family are pushed to the breaking point when the fracking agents come to town. The point of view of each of the characters is influenced by struggles from their past which enriches the storyline and keeps the reader engaged and wanting to know more. Their personal conflicts were also interwoven with the decisions of their friends and neighbors. Even though fracking might bring some benefits to the town as a whole, there would still be the "haves and the have nots". The author shared the science of fracking without preaching, but the events in the story raised my awareness of the topic.
Our book club enjoyed the read and this novel provided us with many talking points. Recommend!
I loved this book! You discover each character in alternating points of view along with the splintered divide of their family, and town, torn apart. You will quickly take up your own stance on the players in this family, a family filled with secrets, shame, and regret. Broken, they bash up against each other - some yearning to re-connect, some wishing for those they love to change, and some desperate to keep the bonds broken. Adding to this complex family drama is the backdrop of a small town in financial distress, whose residents are faced with the decision to partner with Green Energy, a corporation eager to drill for gas and forever change the landscape of the land these small town people know and love. When disastrous events come to bear, environmentally and personally, a storm may be the only thing that brings them all together. This is a powerful story with echoes of the mastery of Nancy Pickard's The Virgin of Small Plains. I couldn't put it down yet at times could hardly keep reading as I feared for the characters I'd come to love and hope for. A highly recommended debut!
The Promise of Pierson Orchard brings to life the challenge of farming in today's world with the temptation of the financial stability that fracking would bring them set against the stresses of a family long torn apart. I was quickly drawn into the story and found my self on a roller coaster ride of emotions as the characters worked through their challenges. At times, I could barely see the words on the pages for the tears in my eyes.
